Eleven prizes from modernisation to neighbourhood development

On the evening of 19 February 2020, the prizes in the competition for the German Building Owner Award were awarded at the Berlin construction trade fair bautec. In the presence of 350 guests, representatives of the sponsors and State Secretary Anne Katrin Bohle, Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Home Affairs, awarded prizes to eleven of the 33 nominees.

"Residential construction is and remains by far the most important construction task in Germany. (...) With this competition, we are making it clear that attention must be focused not only on the sheer number, but also on quality. With the many outstanding and award-winning projects, we are showing that this balancing act is possible", said the organisers Axel Gedaschko, President of the GdW, Susanne Wartzeck, President of the Association of German Architects and Markus Lewe, Vice-President of the German Association of Cities.

Among the eleven winning projects, five involved landscape architects bdla:

Two prizes were awarded in the "New Residential Areas" category. One went to wbg Nürnberg GmbH for the project "Neues Wohnen Sündersbühl". According to the jury, the project, which was realized with the planning consortium NWS GdbR and ganzWerk, Nuremberg, and Thiele Landschaftsarchitekten, Schwabach, convincingly takes into account the social demand for an intergenerational, mixed-age new residential area with affordable living space.

"Activation of ecclesiastical properties" was the theme that the Archdiocese of Cologne decided was worthy of a prize, according to the jury's assessment. The integrative housing project "Klarissenkloster Köln" - Architects: LK Architekten Regina Leipertz und Martin Kostulski Partnerschaftsgesellschaft mbB, Cologne; open space planning: club L 94 Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH, Cologne - exemplifies the opportunities that lie in the conversion of church buildings.

In the category "Small Housing Estates with Regional Character", the prize went to Gemeinde Schechen for the project "Seniorenwohnen Schechen", by Deppisch Architekten, and Büro Freiraum, both from Freising. The jury paid particular tribute to the social and sustainable aspects of the senior citizens' residential complex; it is a contemporary response to demographic change and the need to make rural communities fit for the future.

State Secretary Anne Katrin Bohle emphasized, "This year's award winners exemplify the responsibility that builders take in addressing social and environmental challenges in Germany."

The more new buildings are constructed and neighbourhoods are developed, the more important it is to also take into account the residential environment and corresponding open space planning. In addition to the Federal Ministry, the prize is therefore also sponsored by the bdla Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten (Association of German Landscape Architects) and is also supported by DZ HYP AG and Messe Berlin GmbH.
