Nature in Germany is not doing well enough overall, as shown by the current "State of Nature Report" presented by Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze on 19 May 2020.

Especially in the agricultural landscape, the state of nature is predominantly poor. This is particularly true for butterflies and other insect species that depend on flower-rich meadows and pastures. These important ecosystems are becoming increasingly rare in intensive agriculture.

The report notes more positive developments for forests and also sees the first rays of hope in villages and towns: many beech forests are doing well, and there are more birds again in forests and settlements.
