New Baukultur Report 2020/21 published
On 24 June 2020, the Federal Foundation for Building Culture presented the new Building Culture Report 2020/21 "Public Spaces".
The report addresses the conditions and challenges for lively and diverse public spaces. In view of climatic and demographic change and in view of new forms of mobility, the question is how squares, traffic areas, green spaces and other freely accessible places can be redesigned or reconfigured to meet the needs of the future and of people. The report provides results from population, municipal and IHK surveys and shows good examples from all over the country. It also offers recommendations for action aimed at politicians, planners, builders, users and local authorities.
"Parks, squares, sports facilities, but also bridges, roads and paths must enjoy greater appreciation and priority as a common good," explained Reiner Nagel, Chairman of the Board of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture. It is particularly important to constantly improve the functionality and design of these spaces - "because as everyday spaces they shape us and our coexistence". In the Corona period, the importance of well-designed open spaces as living spaces is particularly evident.
Landscape architect bdla Andrea Gebhard, Chairwoman of the Advisory Board of the Federal Foundation, said that "by focusing on public spaces, the Foundation has raised an important issue at the right time. We can only develop vibrant and attractive locations from open space, not the other way around."
The Baukulturbericht 2020/21 is the fourth official status report on the state of building culture in Germany presented by the Federal Foundation to the Federal Government. It was discussed in the Federal Cabinet on 24.6.2020 and forwarded to the Bundestag and Bundesrat.
