No climate change without a turnaround in construction

On 18.11.2021 the conference of building ministers will meet in Erfurt. The initiative Architects for Future A4F has written an open letter to the building ministers with seven concrete proposals for changes to the building code - so far without a response.

With almost 40 percent of total CO2 emissions, the building sector is the biggest lever in the climate crisis. To meet the 1.5° limit, the entire building sector must become climate neutral. Because: No climate change without a building turnaround! In order to achieve the climate targets in the building sector, the focus must be on

- building in the existing stock instead of new construction,
- an appreciative handling of "surfaces" and material and
- recyclability.

The Qualified Open Space Design Plan, as a requirement of the bdla, represents a key building block for the development of sustainable and climate-adapted open spaces in existing buildings and new construction. Architects for Future therefore once again call on the Ministers of Construction to discuss the demands at the Conference of Ministers of Construction and to translate them into concrete legal changes. "Our seven proposals must be incorporated NOW into the amendment of the model building code so that the climate targets can still be met."
