Parliamentary evening of BdB, bdla and BGL

For the "Status Discussion Urban Climate", proven experts from the leading parliamentary committees met with the leaders of the Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BdB), Bund deutscher Landschaftsarchitekt:innen (bdla) and Bundesverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau (BGL). The two-hour expert discussion took place on November 22, 2022 at the German Parliamentary Society in Berlin.

The presidents of the associations emphasized the importance of natural climate protection and climate adaptation and called for further efforts to develop the green infrastructure conceptually, in terms of maintenance and plant selection. They explicitly acknowledged that political decision-makers have prioritized this important issue for the sustainability of urban areas in recent years. In view of other major current crises, the question of the qualitative and quantitative expansion of urban green spaces should not be pushed into the background.

Christina-Johanne Schröder, MdB: "Urban greenery is important for recreation, but also essential for the urban climate. That's why we think urban greenery - just like parks and playgrounds - must be included in the model building code."

Sandra Weeser, MdB: "For me, the climate-adapted further development of urban spaces is one of the central tasks for the future viability of our cities. Green infrastructure must be consistently expanded and smartly applied to continue to make our densely populated centers livable."

Josef Rief, MdB: "Landscape architects, nurseries and landscaping represent the industries that preserve and cultivate our landscape in equal measure. It shows that the climatic challenges require the bundling of many forces. Joint efforts are needed - also in the cities and communities here in Germany - as heat, drought and flooding clearly show us."

Dr. Anja Weisgerber, Member of the German Bundestag: "Climate change has long since arrived in our country, and cities in particular are feeling the effects. It is therefore important to make cities resilient so that they can withstand heavy rainfall events on the one hand and are prepared for extreme heat periods on the other. The urban green plays a very decisive role here."
