With the selection of 122 municipal projects by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag, a new funding program from the Natural Climate Protection Action Program (ANK) is being implemented.

A total of up to 200 million euros will be used to support the unsealing and near-natural and biodiversity-promoting greening of municipal areas, the creation of roadside verges and edges with hedges, shrubs and avenues as well as the renaturation of flowing and still waters. Most of the selected projects are in North Rhine-Westphalia (19), followed by Lower Saxony (14), Bavaria (13) and Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt (11 each). The selected municipalities can now submit a formal application for funding to the project sponsor Zukunft - Umwelt - Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH. The aim is for the projects to be approved before the end of this year and to be able to start as soon as possible.

Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke: "I am very pleased about this great demand (...). Forests and floodplains, soils and moors, seas and water bodies, green spaces in the city and in the countryside - these ecosystems are thus becoming natural climate protectors and helping us to achieve our climate protection goals."
