Recognition of the services rendered to landscape architecture by the board of the Allianz Environmental Foundation

In recognition of his outstanding services to landscape architecture and the profession, the Association of German Landscape Architects has awarded Dr. Lutz Spandau, board member of the Allianz Environmental Foundation, with honorary bdla membership. The honor was bestowed by resolution of the bdla advisory board.

In his eulogy for the award, former bdla President Prof. Adrian Hoppenstedt praised "Lutz Spandau's work in the positions he has held has made a demonstrably high contribution to improving the quality of life in cities and municipalities and to more environmentally friendly and thus sustainable development".

Dr. Lutz Spandau studied landscape management at the Technical University of Munich-Weihenstephan from 1978 to 1983. He remained faithful to teaching as a research assistant at the Chair of Landscape Ecology at the TU Munich-Weihenstephan with Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Haber. After receiving his doctorate in 1988, he worked together with Prof. Haber as an academic advisor at the aforementioned chair on various research projects in ecosystem research.

From 1991 onwards, he was responsible for the conception and structure of the foundation and its funding projects as a member of the board of directors of the Allianz Environmental Foundation, which is endowed with 50 million euros in basic assets, together with a board of trustees. In January 2012, a change was imminent: the headquarters of the Allianz Environmental Foundation were moved from Munich to the Allianz Forum on Pariser Platz in Berlin.

Over the past decades, the Allianz Environmental Foundation and its Board of Management have provided financial support and technical assistance to a large number of projects in the areas of environmental and climate protection, urban living, sustainable regional development, biodiversity and environmental communication on the basis of a continuously evolving funding concept. The constant concern was to make a contribution to an existence worth living in a secure future. A special "high light" from the perspective of landscape architecture were and are the contributions to the "Gardens of the World" in Berlin Marzahn, the Mauerpark and the Lustgarten, awarded the German Landscape Architecture Prize in 2003.

A large number of funded projects (120 large-scale and approx. 6,500 small-scale projects) were managed by Dr. Lutz Spandau and his team. The annual "Benediktbeurer Gespräche" (Benediktbeuern Talks) - an independent, non-denominational and non-partisan forum for the discussion of fundamental environmental issues - as well as the "Deutsche Klimapreis" (German Climate Prize) for schools go back to his initiative and enjoy unchallenged popularity and participation.

Dr. Lutz Spandau is a member of various committees for environmental protection and nature conservation and has received numerous honours for his commitment. Particularly noteworthy is his long-standing involvement in the Federal Association of German Foundations and there from 1998 to 2013 the leadership of the working group Environment, Nature, Health, for which he was presented in 2013 the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

"Sometimes," says Prof. Hoppenstedt, who was a member of the Allianz Environmental Foundation's Board of Trustees for ten years from 2006, "I think he underestimated the importance of the interesting and varied field of work he was allowed to do as a landscape architect. I think there is hardly a landscape architect in Germany who has been allowed to do such an exciting, fulfilling and successful job." Congratulations.
