The Association of German Landscape Architects (bdla), Landesverband Baden-Württemberg e.V., has awarded the Baden-Württemberg Landscape Architecture Prize for the first time. The jury, headed by Prof. Ulrike Böhm, Urban Planning Institute/Open Space Design, University of Stuttgart, had screened and evaluated 24 nominated projects out of 75 submitted works in the final evaluation round.

The 2022 prize was awarded to relais Landschaftsarchitekten Heck Mommsen (Berlin) for the design "Neue Ufer, Überlingen" at the festive award ceremony on April 13, 2022 at the Hospitalhof in Stuttgart. relais LA had created a near-natural shoreline on Lake Constance for the 2021 State Garden Show in Überlingen, as well as redesigning the inner-city, urban-style lakeside promenade. A further ten prizes were awarded.

The bdla's reason for launching the competition was the greatly increased demands that cities and municipalities are facing in dealing with the increasingly scarce resource "landscape". The competition called for projects that were based on a recognizably innovative and sustainable planning approach. The enormous potential of this approach and the importance of well-designed public green spaces and landscapes for the urban climate and local ecosystems in the face of global climate change were emphasized by patron Nicole Razavi, Minister for State Development and Housing in Baden-Württemberg.

The joy about the response to the award, the quality of the work and also to the joint celebration with about 150 guests from politics and business as well as the exchange with Kolleg:innen was noticeable to the chairman of the bdla Baden-Württemberg e.V.. "First-time, unique, successful". This is how Urs Müller-Meßner described the result of the competition. "Not only the planning experts of landscape architecture and executing companies contribute to the success of the projects. No, success also includes a courageous and open-minded building owner. Without them, the diversity and uniqueness of the projects would not exist. Planning and building are currently becoming increasingly difficult," Müller-Meßner continues. "Severe weather events and hot spells as messengers of the already perceptible climate change, the scarcity of raw materials and the increase in the price of energy present us with immense challenges. What is valid today is already history tomorrow. This requires a lot of innovative power and new objectives. Our award ceremony today is under the sign of this change and tries to find answers to the omnipresent questions of the future, as a valuable contribution to a lively dialogue with landscape and urban spaces." In the future, the Baden-Württemberg Landscape Architecture Prize will be awarded every two years.

In her keynote speech "Europe in Spaceship Earth", the President of the Architect's Council of Europe ACE, Ruth Schagemann, emphasized "that the need for a paradigm shift in planning and building is finally being recognized throughout Europe. After the debate on content, it is now high time to act. In the European context, we need to move away from a purely technocratic and industry-driven approach to energy and environmental policy, towards an idea of a built environment that includes cultural and social aspects and sees the quality of our built environment as a top priority. Landscape architects will matter if we are to create the ecological transformation of our built environment in Europe. Tomorrow's building culture is being created today! Every individual will matter, every planning concept, no matter how manageable, every planning decision, no matter how small."

The appreciation of the awarded projects was made by the patronage and Laudator:innen from the jury accompanied by impressions of the respective projects.
The Frank Dupree Trio feat. Jakob Krupp and Meinhard 'Obi' Jenne played refreshing sounds "between classical music and jazz".

With the honor of the public price by the medium partner FREIRAUMGESTALTER in the publishing house Eugen Ulmer, editor Heike Vossen, among the Teilnehmer:innen of on-line Votings for the determination of the public price also the winner:innen of the 10 Jahres-Abonnements for the magazine FREIRAUMGESTALTER were drawn. GDLA Gornik Denkel landscape architects from Heidelberg drew the lots from nearly 350 registered voices. A total of almost 600 people took part in the public voting.

For each award-winning category, a heavyweight sculpture made of architectural concrete was awarded to the design authors, which was produced according to designs by bdla Baden-Württemberg with Svenja Nething from Manufaktur Godelmann. For the award of the first prize, the mayor Jan Zeitler for the project "Neue Ufer," Überlingen, also received an appreciation plate, which can be permanently installed or hung in a prominent place on site.

Marianne Mommsen took the floor at the end on behalf of all the award-winning projects: "Landscape architecture must make a difference! And to make a difference, we need strong clients who are willing to take risks and think far ahead. And with Überlingen we were lucky to have such partners. They carried the project, they overcame resistance and had the courage to realize not the simplest, but a sustainable solution. This is exactly the kind of client we need for our work. Builders who fight for public space and think it into the future!

The documentation for the Baden-Württemberg Landscape Architecture Prize 2022 was distributed to the prize winners and guests hot off the press. It will also accompany the exhibition on the competition, which will be on display in August at the Landesgartenschau Neuenburg am Rhein 2022 (vernissage 04.08.2022, 14.00) and at the Gartenschau Eppingen 2022 (vernissage 08.09.2022, 14.00), both at the Treffpunkt Baden-Württemberg.

The evening found its early summery conclusion at the buffet and in the inner courtyard of the Hospitalhof.
