The joint symposium "Wohnraum Freiraum: Verdichtung ohne Vernichtung!?" on 22 June in the Visitor Centre of the IGA 2017 Berlin was a great success and had a total of around 100 participants.

The focus was on questions about the future of open spaces as places of everyday life in the neighbourhood, which are central to urban coexistence: How should they be dealt with in the future in view of growing cities? In addition to speakers from the media, science and administration, bdla members Ulli Böhm and Eike Richter also had their say on the podium. Oliver Hoch (FGL_Berlin-Brandenburg) drew a conclusion of the organizers in 10 theses. The central demand: redensification in sought-after residential areas is unavoidable, but must be done with a sense of proportion. Philipp Sattler was the moderator.

At the end of the conference with eight lectures the largest chances and challenges of the complex topic were worked out again in a panel discussion with public round. The alliance of organizers, the Fachgemeinschaft Bau Berlin und Brandenburg e.V., the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gartenkunst und Landschaftskultur (DGGL) LV Berlin-Brandenburg e.V., the Fachverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau Berlin und Brandenburg e.V. and the Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten (bdla) Landesgruppe Berlin-Brandenburg, is currently working on the financing for the publication of a conference documentation.
