The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state association will present the award for the best final thesis of 2021 in the field of landscape architecture at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences at the next event of the state association. The award ceremony with the presentation of a book gift, which was not held due to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, will be held later this year.

The award for the best thesis 2021 goes to Ms. Rhea Saldanha for her master's thesis "The circle of life: an ecological conceptual design proposal of the Neubrandenburg cemetery". The thesis was supervised by Professor Dr. Carolin Rolka from Neubrandenburg and assistant professor Abhishek Koduvayur Venkitaraman from the school of planning and architecture in Bhopal/India, now an urban planner and doctoral student at Kyoto University.

The jury honored the work of Rhea Catherine Saldanha on the topic of multicultural burial and the handling of cemetery development. This is a topic that will pose a challenge for all planners in the coming years.

In an initial analysis, the different demands, needs and necessities that a cemetery entails are examined. Rhea Catherine Saldanha describes the cemetery as a "circle of life", a place where death and life stand side by side.

These findings are implemented in a very bold concept design for the redesign of the New Cemetery in Neubrandenburg. As far-reaching as the redesign appears to be, it is ultimately simple to implement - and can be realized with some of the simplest maintenance measures. The concept developed is to be seen as a feasible vision for the future of the cemetery, which acts in the sense of sustainable use of the valuable green space.
