To set the mood, Kathrin Weiß, in her capacity as Chairman of the Foundation of the Horticultural Museum, and the curator in charge, Sybille Küttner, presented the concept for the updated permanent exhibition. It will be supplemented by contemporary themes, such as climate change. The museum building - the Cyriaksburg on the EGA - and the surrounding open spaces are undergoing renovation and conversion, which will be completed in time for the opening of the BUGA.

Officially, the reception began with a welcome by the representatives of the green associations; these were Wolfram Stock, Chairman of the bdla Thuringia, Thomas Bleicher, Chairman of the DGGL Thuringia, and Udo Lindenlaub, Regional President Thuringia of the FGL.

Wolfram Stock reported on the past and upcoming activities of the Thuringian bdla. Thus, he mentioned the successful Erfurt Dialogue in spring 2019 at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt with interesting interdisciplinary speakers and audience.

The close cooperation of the bdla with the University of Applied Sciences was evident in other events such as the implementation of the Central German Student Competition 2018/2019 at the location Gotha - Arnoldipark as well as in the continuation of the event series "best practice", which this year looks beyond national borders and is dedicated to the topic "LA abroad - international landscape architecture". It will start in autumn at the University of Applied Sciences.

Thomas Bleicher highlighted the work of the DGGL on the garden network "Gartenkultur Thüringen" and spoke in favour of expanding the network, which currently consists exclusively of historical sites, to include contemporary landscape architecture projects.

Udo Lindenlaub referred to the potential of state garden shows with regard to the sustainable upgrading of places, landscapes and living spaces. He appealed for the continuation of the implementation of this "instrument" and called for a regular two-year cycle for Thuringia and Hesse, following the successful implementation in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg respectively.

The subsequent keynote speech "BUGA Erfurt - a model for success?" was held by Dr. Sascha Döll, Head of the Gardens and Cemeteries Department of the City of Erfurt. In a brief historical outline, he illustrated the beginnings of federal garden shows in Germany. He clarified the connection between the terms urban renewal, urban redevelopment and temporary exhibition of the green professions.

What is opened after years of planning and construction as a garden show with a lot of entertainment value carries a strong sustainable idea. He portrayed the Erfurt BUGA sites, the Gera floodplain, the Petersberg and the EGA. The content focuses on the renaturation of water bodies, barrier-free access, the bastion crown path and an upgrading of Erfurt's densely populated north. For the final spurt up to the BUGA, he wished for motivated planners, energetic landscapers and anticipation among the people of Erfurt.

To the musical accompaniment on the piano by the pianist Andreas Groß, there were culinary delights and drinks with relaxed conversations among colleagues, friends and guests.

Special thanks go to the sponsors, the nursery Lorberg, the company Rinn Beton- und Naturstein as well as the company Leipziger Leuchten GmbH, which supported the 23rd New Year's reception.
