More urban greenery for effective climate and flood protection "Gardens in the city"

An exhibition on the Saxon state competition

Green and natural urban open spaces are not just an accompaniment to a city's buildings: against the background of the noticeable effects of climate change and the associated weather extremes, they are of the utmost importance for the urban climate, an indispensable habitat for plants, animals and humans and increase the quality of life in cities and communities.

Effective environmental, climate and flood protection can only be achieved with more green spaces in cities!

The exhibition presents successful examples of how this can be achieved as part of the results of the "Gardens in the City" competition in 2023. The Free State of Saxony has been recognizing green design projects that demonstrate successful alternatives to sealed open spaces for many years. Outstanding projects were awarded in the three categories "Open spaces at public facilities - green spaces/parks/playgrounds", "Outdoor facilities in residential areas or recreational areas within commercial areas" and "Other newly designed open space systems".

The projects are presented using before-and-after photos and accompanying texts as a successful joint effort by clients, planners and gardening and landscaping companies.

The exhibition shows the diversity of newly created or reconstructed urban open spaces with high design quality, aesthetic standards and function-oriented design.

Construction of a show garden at the ZfBK
The show garden will be built on the premises of the ZfBK by gardening and landscaping trainees. Natural building materials, shrubs and perennials are used to create a green interior design in the form of a model garden, just as it could be created outdoors. Its creation can be observed through the large display windows of the ZfBK. The structure is similar to the performance requirements of the Saxon professional competition for trainee landscape gardeners.
