The Federal Building Ministry recently presented a strategy for heat protection in urban development and construction.

It describes the formation of heat islands and how to avoid them and summarizes what is already being used by planners and what developments will be necessary in urban areas in the future to ensure that urban spaces remain high-quality places worth living in. The heat protection strategy focuses on the following areas, among others:

  • Creating more space for greenery that provides cooling.
  • Designing heat prevention and water-sensitive urban structures together.
  • Shade places exposed to heat, such as city squares and playgrounds.
  • Identify cooling places in the city that offer sufficient recreation in extreme heat.
  • Heat protection on buildings through passive heat protection solutions and nature-based solutions such as green roofs and façades.

The heat protection strategy can here can be accessed here. In addition, various bdla working groups and working groups will take a closer look at the heat protection strategy.
